I was always a fan of Syndicate -- managing resources, conquering territories, brainwashing, simple search & destroy missions, controlling taxes, and a semi-decent story line made it fun.

EV -- me and my neighbor would play for games on end.

Marathon -- a FPS with a story... it was perfect!

I also had a CD set called MacCube -- it must have contained every shareware and demo written before '97, and there were some really good ones in there -- generally mindless, short, but entertaining anyway.

Does no one remember Armor Alley, one of the first helicopter games? Me and my uncle used to play against each other on our SE/30s ALL the time! Also on the list are Strategic Conquest, Pegleg (freaking awesome!), EV of course, Swoop, Asterax, Lemmings!, and Crystal Quest.

Armor Alley is definitely one of my favorites. Scarab of Ra was good too, but although I spent a fair bit of time playing things like brickles and shufflepuck, I can't say I really liked them that much: they were just the only things that'd run on my Mac Classic! One other game that would, though, is RoboSport, my all-time favorite game (I just been playing a couple rounds on my new Quadra 605!). Another one that nobody mentioned (I don't think) that I used to like alot was Solarian II, which seems to have been the inspiration for some of Maelstrom. Maelstrom, of course, would be my other all-time favorite.

Well, Doom had a story, but it changed so little it got too redundant for me. The progressing weirdness of the levels. (remember the intestine-covered walls in many rooms? Or the random monster-spitting head at the end? Still can't explain that.)

Marathon's great because the Boomer levels are like one large non-drug induced acid trip.

Lode Runner: I loved this game so much, I used to play it on my little 512k and make maps for hours.

EVO: Not as many memorys, but some.

X-Wing: I used to play this with my friend, and get so pissed at him when he launched a pair of torps into a friendly frigate.

The Incredible Machine! But I guess it isn't that old.

Now sorry if I'm getting a little off-topic, but going back even farther:

Blue Max on Commodore 64. Did anybody play that one? It was a Mars Rising style scrolling shooter, but you had a biplane and you could drop bombs on cars. It even had 8-bit color back when the mac plus was a glimmer in Steve Jobs' eye. I would still be playing it, but the disc got corrupted.

I remember talking about it in 5th grade, which was 7 years ago.

But, I have a game I adored more than TIM: Widget Workshop. Breadboards for the common idiot, it was. Sadly, my floppy disks have since gone bad, and I can't reinstall it anymore. I miss it so. Can't even find it as abandonware.

First and foremost, Full Throtle!!! By far the best RPG game ever produced, great storytelling, fantastic soundtrack!

EV and EVO. Wow, the originallity...

Munchies
Power Pete
Lemmings
Apache Longbow
Oh yeah, and Shufflepuck...many a happy computing lesson spent playing that...

Oh, yeah, Widget Workshop..I was good at that. I once created an immensley complicated machine that pretty much took care of my probability unit for a year...and it was a month. I made the widget so that it could roll a die (with a changeable # of sides) or a coin any number of times and record the results. It did more complicated stuff than that, though. Heh, great company. Maxis, the poor bought-up makers of SimCity. Does anyone notice that the SimCity games have been decreasing in quality and increasing in flash since Maxis was bought up by EA?

Shadow Keep

Finally someone mentions it! Did you play the original B+W version or that color remake one?

Lode Runner and Power Pete were the first mac games I ever played. Power Pete was awesome! Getting those keys and saving the bunnies! Lode Runner was fun, but it got old after a while.
Syndicate is probably my favorite game of all time, barring SimCity 2k. I feel sorry for both Bullfrog and Maxis, for getting boughtup by EA.
Apeiron was the first Ambrosia Game i ever played, and I was addicted to it and its psychedelic shrooms.

To all those disappointed in Maxis' performance under EA, SimCity 4 looks like it might redeem 3000! Those graphics are sweet (unlike 3000), and I think the intricacies of the visual feedback will give cities a unique feel, rather than the genericness of the previous games. Hopefully the game will look back more to 2000 in the micomanagement of the city, rather than make it into "The Sims: Playground" or something.

Those were the days...

I remember playing Pitfall and Aztec on our old Atari... that doesn't work anymore, though...

As for mac games though, I must think back to our old Mac SE...

Let's see, there was Scarab of Ra (as others have said VERY cool game), Space Bubbles, Missle Command, Ashes, Wheel of Fortune (I love the way Pat goes "quack!" or something like that when there are no vowels left ), and of course Sim City and Sim Ant.

And who can forget playing around with HyperCard? I remember Dad got all kinds of stuff for HyperCard on White Knight...

For extra points, who else remembers any of this...???

w00t! I have all of those on my SE30! Manhole was the light of my life back in the day...

And I still play Scarab of Ra. I beat it in three levels. Space Bubbles was always kinda strange, but Missile Command and Ashes...There is no equal.

Wow.. it seems like most things have been mentioned, not to mention a lot that I had forgotten about!

Shufflepuck was good on the Classic, but anything faster made it pretty much impossible!
Armor Alley was great for the strategy, and got insanely hard in the later levels.
... and a lot of others could be mentioned again .
Pathways into Darkness, and of course, all of the Marathon trilogy and all of EV!

And the only ones that I haven't seen mentioned yet would be Fury of the Furries, Infotron and Vette.. ringing any bells? .

I never liked Pathways. Marathon was better.

Has Power Pete been mentioned yet?

Hmm... the puzzle-style of Pathways was quite appealing I found, but of course I never finished it without the help of the sites around the place. I would never have found out about even walking through the wall for the blue crystal without the help ! But yes, Marathon was better - less thought, better graphics (who needs better than that?), far more options and communication of the storyline, albeit vague as anything .

Also thought of a couple more: Pirates - interesting ideas but got hard and boring before too long; and Warlords I and II - how could I forget.. they have probably accounted for more gaming hours than any others for me - interesting ideas and somehow they didn't get boring :0. It's just a shame that they (SSG) dropped support for Mac after that, so we'll likely never see one for OS X .

This was Bungie at it's height. The scenery, the sound effects, the visual beauty, and (OMG!) The realistic gameplay engrossed me in the game. It had the best story I have ever seen in a strategy game yet.

That was indeed one of the better games in existance. And I actually managed to dig up a CD of it, too bad Classic SUCKs so it doesn't play well.

I can't belive nobody said Pegleg!

I think it is fine that this topic was dug up. It's better than making a new one. I think it is good to bring up a topic like this for all to see. It's cool. I like to look at what people said here. It's not against what the "no gravedig" rule is there to prevent. It is not bringing up some long dead useless topic that answered some question that was in the FAQ anyway. This is a valid discussion/brainstorm that people would like to see.

Dude, there's an OS X patch. Not to mention a plug-in version for Myth 2. It's really rather nice to be able to play TFL with units that remember their formations.

Now for my list, since I don't think I ever posted to this topic. I think I'll stick to all the System 7+ gaming I did, prior to getting a 400 Mhz iMac ~5-6 years ago, to make it easier, since I played a lot of old games after getting that computer that I really should have got to before. This would be stuff I played on a 75 MHz PowerMac 7200.

- Reliant. It was like a typical top-down space game, but with a very Star Trek flair. You do missions, upgrade your ship, pick crew members, and so forth. It was really hard though.

- I'm going to get it out of the way right now: Any Ambrosia game, especially EV/EVO. (Well, EVO mainly I guess.) The only ones I played exclusively after 500 MHz became commonplace were Diemos, Pop-Pop, and EVN. Because they made some of the best games in the days of <100 MHz, I am a poster on this forum today.

- Descent. Seriously, some great times were had playing LAN games of Descent. And it was kinda epic and creepy, navigating through endless bizarre mine shafts with crazy robots.

- Glider Pro. "Slumberland" was an epic. I can probably still beat it too... but I never found more than 3/4 of the rooms.

- F/A-18 Hornet. Actually, this came to mind first, when I first started thinking about this list. A lot of people have mentioned X-Wing, and while I probably loved that game more and played it more, Hornet evokes the most nostalgia for some reason. Too bad the later sequels have failed abysmally to bring the series into the modern era (though I still do love me some Korea).

- Crystal Caliburn / Loony Labyrinth pinball. Too bad I have to buy them again if I want to play in OS X.

- Rebel Assault. Low-res ported from DOS bummer that it may have been according to Mac User, it was my first CD game as a kid and I loved it. Actually, it still seems like a very fun game if I play it today. Some good atmosphere. Rebel Assault 2 not so much though. Leastways, the demo sucked.
