Full Version: Black & White: Pokémon for the older crowd?

I just saw this game in my local Apple® provider store, Computer World. Black & White. It's actually two different games, one is black and the other is white. It seems that it makes a difference as to which one you pick. That's why it reminded me of pokémon (No matter how many of you love or hate Pokémon, let's just keep that game out of this string). It also seems that the game concept is that you are a god and you're either creating the world or evolving a race. It looked like an interesting concept, and I was wondering if anyone knew more about it. Thanks in advance.

From what I have heard the OS X version of Black and White is very unstable

Save yourself the waste, and DO NOT BUY THAT GAME. It's horribly unstable on any platform, and its "features" can get irritating at best. The gameplay sucks, it eats resources like you wouldn't believe, and it goes from mind-numbingly easy to incredibly difficult right away. It has a mandatory tutorial, which is very, very long, and gets annoying after the first time. Though it would be a good game in theory, the bugs and imbalances really make it a pretty sad excuse for a game. Though apparently some people like it...
Everyone I know, however, including myself, hate it with a passion and wish we had wasted the $50 on something more fulfilling, like Romanian low-budget films without subtitles.

Its a great theme, just a freaking horrible interface. I couldn't get my lion to eat the grain and not the people. And more often then not I was running out of resources. I could only play the skirmish mode because the intro in the beginning of each game was horribly irritating that I couldn't watch it again. Its very unstable and choppy gameplay. Maybe if Ambrosia made a clone I would dare touch the genre again.

A blurb from someone who actually liked it:

Yeah, the intro is annoying, but I believe there's an option when you start a new game to skip at least part of the tutorial. I didn't have any problem with stability in OS 9 or X.

This is one game where I really missed a 2 button mouse with a scroll wheel. If I really liked the game, I'd probably get one because the interface is really desiged with one of these in mind.

There aren't 2 versions of the game. Maybe that's the front and back of the box, I've thrown mine away or I'd check. Maybe there are two boxes, but the contents are the same.

As far as the game itself, you play the god of a village on an island. You tend to the needs of your villagers by miraculously watering the crops, telling them where to build and such. You attempt to convert other villages to believe in you by casting miracles to impress them.

You also have a creature. You can train it to cast miracles on its own. This is useful for sending it out to convert eople outside your range of influence or busting up your opponant's village. Not only do you have to train you creature to use abilities, you also must get it to know what you think is acceptable behavior.

I like this game a lot, but I see why it wouldn't be the favorite of many people. The gameplay is slow, almost painstakingly. Also, it requires some pretty hefty hardware. I don't think i'd try it on anything less than my GeForce2MX.

Personally, I'd wait for B+W 2 to come out. Apparantly one of the new features is the ability to turn your villagers into warriors, and wage war with people with your creature leading them. A bit like WarCraft III.

You've got a pet halibut?
Yes. I chose him out of thousands. I didn't like the others, they were all too flat.
Pyro
jspoon is right on all counts. Personally, I had more fun being a god and figuring out what all cool stuff I could do to the game. I had cities that loved me, and feared me . My creature was alright that the end of the game, but until the last level, you really dont need him. Skirmish games are much more fun, you can just experiment with spells and your citizens. If you get the hang of the game, it can be fun for awhile. The problem with it is while it has a lot of things to do, there still aren't enough to keep someones interest for say, over a month to two months. Id say buy it if you have a good computer (I have a g4 733 with a geforce2 and have experienced no crashes, nor slow down). Its a new take on gaming which is always a good thing to see.
