Does anyone know if StarWars Galactic Battlegrounds from LucasArts is worth anything? I'm planning on buying it but don't know if it's good or not.

I haven't seen anything in detail about it, but I also have yet to hear dirty words about it. It looks a lot like Starcraft, so I want it.

Well, there's Dune (DOS), a graphical/text adventure-type game, Dune 2 (DOS), a top-down strategy game like warcraft, and Dune 2000, which I haven't played. I don't think there's any for mac though.

All the reviews that I have read of SW:GB have been quite good, but from what I've heard it's not really any different from AoE2 in terms of gameplay. "AoE2 with Star Wars graphics" is one description that I've heard. If you really like AoE2 or you're a Star Wars fanatic and have some cash to burn, I'd say get it, but you could probably get a much better game for your money at this point.

Indeed. It's hard to grasp, yes, but there is a world outside the Warcraft universe, sparsely populated with games that are not titled Warcraft! I'm struggling to name any such game, but trust me, they exist.

Dune 2 is somewhat like starcraft, except for the 386. Was this the first game with the (now) warcraft-like mechanics? (i.e. a top-down strategy game where you "mined" for resources to gain money to buy buildings and such that created units for combat....)
Or were there earlier ones....?

I played dune 2000 for PSX.... not a great game, seemed exactly like C&C with lamer graphics.... and warcraft is a boring, horrable game.... i could go into vivid detail about what's wrong with it. First, the enemy always gets the bigger stuff first. Second, it's whoever-hits-first-wins. My footmans's fighting your grunt, and the grunt hits first, then my footman CANT win. The games are too dependant on whoever has the biggest army.. i'm much happier playing Close Combat...

Warcraft II and III both use a random number from (minimum damage) to (maximum damage) to determine the damage taken. You still can win, even if the other person gets the first hit in.

Emperor: Battle for Dune was somewhat recently released by Westwood. Dunno if it's for mac.

To expand upon that: SWGB has crashed twice on me now, and each time, in the "Recovered Items from Macintosh HD" folder inside the Trash, there has been an folder named "AoE".

Edit- Oh yeah, being a Star Wars fan, I love how the games are coming out for Mac again, via Aspyr (which I love, the company). I wonder who did that- LucasArts or Aspyr or a third party?

I like this game a lot. If you like Star Wars you'll like this game. It's not a revolutionary games by any means. It's quite mediocre in that department. The races are completely even. Little to no difference in each race's units or abilities. Just in looks.

I know you said you're not a fan of the warcraft series, but War3 does put this game to shame in many many ways. But I enjoy the online play of GB much better. More friendly, less cut throat. The games last a lot longer too. About an hour longer.

Does anybody know anything Battleground's expanion? I heard there are two new races (hutts and republic), and something like 200 new units total and a heap of new upgrades. I got these facts off websites long before the game was released. I'm not sure if it is true. I didn't want to buy it until someone told me about it.

Actually, even if your Footman hit first, the grunt would always win in WC3.

Warcraft? Bah. It's kind of fun, but the engine does have some problems. Give me Civ 3 any day. Nukes by 1800. Hehe. And that was going a little slow. Of course, this is slightly biased due to the fact that I rule at the Civ series (currently holding 247% on Civ 2).

The Hutts aren't one of the new races. The new races are the Confederation and the Republic. The efficient buildings technology is enough to make this expansion a worthwhile purchase. I've mentioned this before, but the trooper generation time for the Republic, after research, is 2.5 seconds (they also have faster holocron nova generation).

That actually sounds 1/2 way cool. Does every race have a different efficent building?

Try out Warcraft 3 before you go on ranting and raving about the entire Warcraft series. Warcraft 3 is better than Starcraft, and that in itself is a great achievement.
