Lately I've been playing a lot of a shareware game called Candy Crisis. It's sort of a Jewelbox/Tetris kind of game. The in game music at first seems to be the typical variety, but there are enough variations in tune that it never seems to grate on the nerves. I've found that I don't enjoy the game as much if I turn the music off. For a little shareware game I found that to be impressive.

AirBurst has a subtle soundtrack, and you don't notice it until it's gone. I like it.
Oni has one of the best music scores I've heard. Very good.

Bubble Trouble was pretty decent, but there wasn't that much of it. In fact, I think repeating the music that much made the whole game seem repetative to me.
Thats not a general rule though. Remember Tetris for the old Game Boy...

I'm sorry to rain on your lemmings parade, but the all time best game music ever is most definitely... Final Fantasy 3. Bar none, this game's music added more to the game than any other music before or after it. I don't even know if half of you remember it, since it was pre-The FF7-popularity spike but trust me, if you have a SNES it is well worth it to buy this game. The Opera Scene... still amazing... wow....

Don't make me laugh. Early FF music was pretty cool, but the Opera scene??? Maybe it's just that I didn't play FF3 till years after it came out, but that seemed incredibly cheesy to me, music included.

FF7/8 music hands down. Mainly because those are the only ones I've played. ((stupid FF8 wont work on my crappy emulator

))
Also, I've only played the Oni demo. But the music of the ending scequence of the intro is astonishing. But then many epic anime movies/games have some of the c00lest music out there. (just my opinion)

For those of us who have been around since the Atari and Commodore64 these things were amazing. The Opera scene was and is awesome, just like the scene at the end of Super Metroid where the metroid actually saves Samus. I remember the first time it started raining in Legend of Zelda:A Link to the Past I nearly wet myself. I know I sound retarded but trust me, it was seriously awesome at the time. Nothing really since the SNES has really grabbed my attention like those games w/ the exceptions of: FF7, EVO/Nova, Mario 64, Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time.
(And I know this isn't really relevant but the greatest game of all time was on the SNES-- Chrono Trigger.)

Einhander had some pretty bitchin' music, enough so that I actually own the soundtrack. The Book of Ys games weren't bad either. As for FF, FF2 has the best battle theme to date, but I think FFT has the best overall music of all the FFs.

I liked the music from Terranigma a whole lot. It was very, very good for effect. In fact, there is one track that first plays in a town full of zombies, and the music creeped out everyone I know who's played it. Not bad for SNES MIDI.
And FF8 was an absolutely horrible game, but it has very, very, VERY good music.
And as for unobtrusive, good background music,
Orisinal does that very well. I get the music from It Takes Two stuck in my head all the time, but that's not really a bad thing.

I still get that song stuck in my head all the time. I even have the symphonic version of the FF8 soundtrack. (Though I think it sounds better in the original computer-generated version. And the damn symphonic CD doesn't have the music from Esthar!)

The symphonic CD does indeed make some of the best tracks from that game sound even better, though it is a pity only a select few of the pieces are on it.

I would have to say that the music of FF2 had the biggest "Wow" factor for me at the time ("It's like the FF1 music, but
symphonic!").
Favorite mood music:
- The FF2 take on the "Bridge Crossing" theme. Somehow wistful and epic at the same time.
- The "Final Battle" music in CT. Wonderfully pulse-pounding.
- The "Opera" suite in FF3 (not counting the [even then] remarkably cheesy "singing").
I think Cythera generally did a good job of "music as background" - I only really noticed the music's effect after I turned it off.
Of course, better still are the remixes at remix.overclocked.org . I would especially recommend "Shadow's Theme" and "Terra in Black" (both from FF3/6) and "Winds of Time" (from CT)

Yeah. It still pisses me off to no end that the characters named Laguna and Irvine were in the Crappy One. (For those of you who don't know, the US branch of Square is in Costa Mesa, CA, which is right next to Irvine and Laguna Beach.)
I still think Laguna, and his battle song, were cool, though. Not just because I grew up in the town he was named after.

All sorts of stuff. The Super Mario theme is no longer worth worshipping, but the infinite number of spinoffs are. I have six on iTunes.
The music from all three in the Myst series is relaxing and almost profound. I keep the Exile music on iTunes, too.
I agree, candy Crisis' music is pretty damn good. AirBurst has an excellent song, but it's so short that it becomes repetitive and therefore annoying. A longer remix I found
here.
The music from Chiral and Barrack also kick arse, although as I understand it those where imported from elsewhere, since I have heard the Chiral music on a car commercial elsewhere.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: The Hyrule Symphony Orchestral version.
Secret of Mana: Orchestral version
Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mara 2): Nice
Terranigma: Sets the theme incredibly well.
Final Fanasy 8: Both versions, Orchestral was better for the tracks it included.
Oni.: Damn that soundtrack is awesome!
There are others..... but those are my favourites, not in any particular order.

Interesting point. Andrew Campbell likes to put his stuff in lowercase with lots of dashes, don't he? Going for the Japanese "with it" look in every way possible, methinks.

I can't believe I forgot about Xenogears! Screw FF8. Xenogears is the ultimate post CT RPG, period. It may have some minor flaws in gameplay, but it's the damn best in every other field. 1. ChronoTrigger (All I have to say is: Wow.)
2. Terranigma (How come all the good music came from SNES?)
3. Myst III (especially the main theme)
4. Legend of Zelda, orchestrated (and you know why)
5. SPQR (you've probably never heard of it, but the music was so spooky...it fit so well! I think the company that made it died.

Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross both have great music but for my money, it's Final Fantasy 7 all the way. The overworld theme is the best ever composed, and most of the music was perfect for the atmosphere of the game. There were some things that weren't completely polished, but all in all the best music a game could ever have. And One-Winged Angel is your god, bow down now and save yourself the trouble.
What else, The themes from Marathon 2 and Marathon Infinity kicked ass, all Final Fantasy games have at least better than average music. Tony Hawk always has a good soundtrack but I don't really count that as a true soundtrack because the songs usually aren't written for the game. The Myst series has always had an excellent soundtrack.
The Tetris music 0wnz.
