Full Version: Polaris: The Nifty Project That Never Was

This is a link to some screenshots of what was to be my coolest creation ever, a console-style RPG creation tool (a la Final Fantasy) that featured real-time battles and Coldstone/Starcraft-like events and switches. It had suprisingly pretty 32x32 tiles for graphics, rendered using 3D modeling tools, and it had built in fog and shadowing effects and multiple graphics layers.

Alas, Coldstone came out, and ruined my dreams! Ah, well, such is life. I quit working on it since ColdStone was announced, and now I'm somewhat drawn back to the project, if not just for kicks. If I ever end up completing it, it'll be freeware. Just for people to have fun with. If I had created this maybe six or seven years ago, it would have damn well revolutionized game creation. Oh well.

Programming can't all be for cash anyway, part of it is just for the pure enjoyment of figuring out things. Who really cares if no one likes what you do, if you like what you did, you struck gold. That's my theory, anyhow.

Looks quite nifty - HyperCard was an awesome tool for just about anything that didn't require massive optimization. Too bad it's dying...

Pretty nifty looking RPG engine, too. Certainly much more complete than any of my abortive attempts at one.

Considered doing a Cocoa port?

Cocoa? Hah! I don't even have OSX.

If anyone wants a copy of the stack to tool around with, e-mail me about it, maybe someone can make something big out of this project. I'm just toying around with the engine right now, finishing the HyperCard version, just out of pure enjoyment.
