Full Version: Lunatic Fringe

I remember billions of years ago when my bro had a Quadra 900 or something. He had a screensaver that was a simple game called Lunatic Fringe. My question is, how many of you ever heard of it or remember it? I was wondering if that screensaver/game was created by Ambrosia because I noticed the 3D style that was similar to Maelstrom.

If it still exist, where can I download it?

Ah jeez, I had that. It was right around the time I played the original Simcity and toxic avenger...a little game where this guy in a blimp drops bombs on toxic waste to clean it up. Go figure. That was a very, very very long time ago, and I'm sure it got tossed. Sorry.

Lunatic Fringe was a great game. It was part of one of the After Dark screensaver packages. I still play it every once in awhile. Oh the memories of those great yet simple games.

I think I did remember that it was part of After Dark screensaver whether you wanted it turned on or off. But I'm still curious if Ambrosia had anything to do with that.

Infact, I played that game first and when my brother introduced to me Maelstrom, I thought it was a sequal to the Lunatic Fringe game or something.

That was a truly quality game. My friend and I used to play it all the time, then spend hours strategizing trying to figure out ways to destroy the enemy base. I think I've still got it around somewhere, but of course After Dark stopped working on the OS that I'm running long ago. To answer your question, Ambrosia was in no way involved with Lunatic Fringe.

I remember that... What was really fun was finding ways to muck up its color table... I have some images lying around (actual screenshots, no further color tinkering!) with a neon enemy base.

I wonder if it's possible to ressurect the game, but somehow make it work independently by removing whatever makes it a screensaver.

Heh...the memories.

I remember Lunatic Fringe. The author was a guy named Ben Haller - Stickman software, wasn't it?

/me checks Google

No, I'm wrong - it's Stick software: www.sticksoftware.com.

He's still around, it seems - check it out: http://www.sticksoftware.com/haller.html

moki - wanna hire him? He's looking for work, progamming in X.

Cheers,
Guapo

I know, I don't really fit here, not being a Mac user, but I grew up playing computer games on Macs, so nostalgia sends me here.

But anyway. I see a few things that can play Lunatic Fringe on Macs, no problemo, but what about on a Windows? It's just a screensaver, shouldn't be that hard to port...

I'm guessing you got to this topic because of a search engine, either on these forums or with Google/the like, but I would suggest for you to check the dates on posts before you reply. This could easily have used a new topic (or even one of the other, more recent topics about the same program).

Regardless, Lunatic Fringe was awesome, so no worries there. As far as playing it on Windows goes, you will probably be stuck with emulating a Mac, using something like Basilisk II. If the source hasn't been released to the public, then the chances of a port go way down. Of course, I don't know the status of the source code, but I'm guessing that if you can't find a Windows version, then you're out of luck. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

You'd be better off re-implementing Lunatic Fringe from scratch. Porting it would require also porting the After Dark framework, which wouldn't be particularly pleasant.

I believe someone is making a EV plug of lunatic fridge. look through the developers corner, you might find something about it there.
