I as able to play Earth and Beyond during the beta, and it was better than I thought it'd be(I was expecting something horrible btw

)
Navigation is simple since you can do 'warp speed' when you're in a system and the nav comp will autopilot you to your target. Of course, there was a glitch where you could manually warp
through a planet.
I found it very similar to EV in terms of gameplay(ie. outfitters, commodities, trade organizations, a pirate organization, etc.). Even navigation is similar which becomes a pain when you are doing the xx-yy run(forgot the planet names) and other similar runs. Like EV, you can't bypass any systems, you have to come out of your jump, but in Earth and Beyond you have to travel to jumpgates which is annoying, not to mention the load times for each new system/station(it's really only a few seconds but I'm an impatient person).
The only real aspect that I'd say doesn't live up to EV is that it is essentially an RPG(being an MMORPG

). Meaning that it has a skill-based system that restricts you from using certain items before obtaining certain skills and certain levels of skills. Also, instead of using a 'mass system' like EV, you get slots that are shared by all weapons and a set of slots shared by all outfits, I'd say that a mix of the two would be best - as in EV. Finally, you get a nice ship to start out with, not all to powerful but still better than measely shuttlecraft. Depending on your occupation/race, I'd say it is the equivalent of about a Scoutship or a Clipper maybe in EV, which is enough to fight off some pirates. Only problem is, there aren't very many hostile NPCs in Earth and Beyond. THey're all restricted to a certain sectors, which is easier for the new player, but not as exciting(?), not to me anyway.
Er.. yeah. I didn't really mean to write a review about my experience beta-testing Earth and Beyond, but somehow I always write atleast 3 times longer than I plan on writing. So I guess I might as well say that, if you are really looking for an online EV-like experience, Earth and Beyond is probably worth a try, assuming that you have a fairly good PC and the cash to pay for the monthly fee. Of course you might also want to wait and see how StarWars Galaxies turns out. And finally, the best course of action - the one that I would take if I could - would be to take that "fairly nice PC", sell it and donate to AmbrosiaSW.
