No. They have to maintain it, and will probably have updates and such. And if you stop playing it, there's no more paying.

And please type in proper English on these boards. There's no reason for "shorthand" here; you have all the time in the world to type your posts. Using "shorthand" serves to lower people's opinions of you.

Well, given the rabid folowing that FF has, I'm sure Square doesn't care because they'll make money no matter what. I know I'm not going to pay, but i have a few friends who can't seem to keep thier pants dry whenever i mention the words "Final Fantasy", so I figure that i can just play it at thier houses.

Anywho...Compared to the other FF stories, FFX is the most dynamic and best told. I'm curious to know what makes FFX a story not worthy of being the best of all the FFX series in your opinion.?

-As far as storytelling is concerned, (nothing is ever said ourtright (for the most part), everything is told through images and character development), nothing beats the viewer over the head...many things are subtle. It gets a B+

-FFX reveals enough information, at the right time to keep your interest. It gets an A in suspense (the classic definitiion)

-It touches on many themes, patricide, family relations, unrequitted love, lost love, racism and ignorance, dreams and reality. A-

-No Final Fantasy series ever have gone so indepth of any of their characters, background and history, as well as their resolutions. It gets and A+ for character development, and the reason why I think it deserves best story.

Wow FF. The best to me was 6 or 7. Unfortunatly I no longer recognize FF series as a game. I played 6 was thrilled. Heard 7 was coming out on playstaion and was dissappointed, but thought that at least they did a good job. 8 came out.....I lost intrest in FF for about a year till a friend showed me 9. At that I decided that FF is a lost series like Chrono Trigger which had great possiblities and then they screwed it up. In truth though I haven't given 10 much of a chance either, but I don't plan on it. Same goes for 11.

The opening sequence I got from some server looks amazing:

The black mages, in the sequence, have those pointy hats and yellow circular eyes...but basically look like children....they all worked together to drop meteors on some huge army, it looks amazing. The trailer focuse in on a little boy and his sister running away from some giant thing. But the facial expressions, and movement almost seemed to be real. The animation definitely rivals...no, I would have to say, is better than the cinematics for Warcraft III.

However it's going to be played, via pc or console, it's not going to be anything like the other FF titles. Should be interesting to see how they work it out.

No, I have played 4-7, never made it through 5 all the way. I liked 6 a lot. probably is my favorite right along with 7...I did give it best game play. The story was compelling, though it didn't play upon my emotions as much as the X. Maybe it was the total package though..along with the eye candy and voice acting.

where's the love for FFX. I was just out with a few friends at the bar...and brother who came back from college for the weekend, and they were tooling on that game. Going off about how I'm the only FF lovin' hippie who thought that story line was good. What's going on? I think even a couple girls with us chimed in and said it sucked cause their boyfriends said it sucked....But I could be wrong, I drank a lot...the girls might not have had an opinion about it at all.

FFX = Weak Sauce? Pish Posh...I loved the game. I mean, come on...
-Lulu, that outfit was *phat as hell. Shameless.
-Auron was the man...his background story was great...duty, honor, and loyalty, even after death.
-Wakka was that friend you had in highschool that you could easily sway him to do anything.....not the brightest one of the bunch.
-Tidus...ok, not the best lead character of the series, but still he was his father's little bitch which lead up to the climax of the whole story.
-Yuna was great, the type of girl you would want to bring home to your folks...you know, live out in the country and own a dog type of girl.
-Rikku was the super energetic girl you'd love to...hang out with. I want to date a girl with spirals in her eyes. Yes, I'm perfectly content with my superficiality.
-Khilmari....whatever, jsut that novelty character that they throw in every installment of the series...

But overall I liked this game a lot. 6, 7, and 10 are by far the best. They are starting to become more and more equal in my eyes. This one wasn't about skill, secrets, or gameplay. It was story and character driven, which made it great. It was like a mini interactive movie.

*Phat - I know that no one respects this word, no need to bring this up in future replies. It just drives my point across.

Chrono Trigger is the best CRPG of all time, hands down. Only RPG to come near it was FF6. (If Xenogears hadn't gotten ****ed-over gameplay wise around the middle, it had the potential to beat even CT. Oh well)

There's something like twelve stories in literature that can possibly be told. Every story ever written is just a variation of one of the twelve basic stories. I can't recall them off the top of my head (I've been out of school too long). So it's not the story that sucks. It's the way it's told. The characters were one dimensional, the game play wasn't even that great, and the climax was somewhat disappointing. Jeez even the artwork sucked. It's one saving grace was that addictive side game with the tarrot card thingies. Forget what it's called. (I've been out of school too long) All and all it was a pretty craptacular game.

The only two I've ever really gotten into were 4 and 5. 5's story wasn't that compelling to me but the gameplay was pretty interesting, and the job system helped it out. I really liked the story in 4, where you are the bad guy, I got about 3/4 of the way through but stopped cause the storyline became more traditional, and the random battles become more annoying. I've never liked random battles in games, which is one of the reason i never got into 6 or 7. I just didn't think the storyline for either were good enough to have me go through a random battle every two steps, though I might give 6 another try at some point.

First of all, FF XI is a travesty.

ONLINE??? ONLINE??????? HOW DARE THEY?? Final Fantasy was always heralded for it's plots, orginality, art, music, and depth. They sucked you in, the things that destroyed life as you new it before redefining it before your eyes. Some of my greatest childhood memories are of the Golden Age FF's, e.g. II-III*. Then it ported to the PS and fully became the story telling experience that blew us all away.

So what do they do now? After X, which IMHO was less than spectactular, not bad, but not the best FF around, Square goes and sells it's soul to the devil (e.g. EverQuest). I mean, what happend to what made Final Fantasy Final Fantasy??

The fact of the matter is I mourn the death of the Final Fantasy series. Even after X I had hopes that Square would get another wonderful game together. But the hammer blow has come, XI will be online. It will be EverQuest. It will HAVE NO FREAKIN' POINT!!

Yes, you could say I'm pissed of about it.

On a happier note, I understand about Chrono Trigger and Xenogears. Chrono Trigger sits at #4 or 5 in my Top Games of All Time list, mostly because the game contains 2 of my RPG pet peeves.

1) A Silent Protaganist: Yes, I understand that this technique is used so that the player can impart his own voice to the protaganist, but the technique and the character vaccum it creates still bugs me.

2) Romances that are set up and never go anywhere: Namely Chrono and Marle. Obviously a sort of romantic tension is set up in the beginning of the game between the two but they never devolp this in the game. That always annoys me, it leaves me with the feeling that something is missing at the end. Either close it up some how (and the whole floating away on balloons thing was way too vague) or get rid of it. I think this happend because of issue #1.

As for Xenogears, it stands as the only game ever to challenge Final Fantasy VIII as my favorite game of all time. For about a week I had a debate in my head over this one as Fei and Squall fought it out in an epic battle of fists and steel. In the end FF 8 reigned supreme, mostly because Xenogears loses momentum at the second disk when the whole thing with the people sitting in chairs starts. Make me think the game was rushed near the end, although it is a credit to the game that even though it was rushed (I'm not sure on that fact, I'm just supposing) it managed to be such a wonderful experience. The whole chairs thing just moves the second disk along way to fast and muddles understanding if you're not really careful.

*Yes, I use the US Designations because that's how I distinguished between the games when I was 12 and never bothered to convert when I learned the truth. Deal with it.

First, while I don't like the idea of Final Fantasy XI being online, don't say they're ruining all the future ones. FFXII could very well become known as the best RPG ever for all we know.

(Spoiler warning for those who haven't played ahead)

If you nab Final Fantasy Chronicles you can view the animated cutscenes. One of which, the end cutscene, involves those two getting married.

Another thing is they don't nessisarily float away on balloons- The ending depends on what you do in the game. Since I've played the game I know that you get that variation of the ending by flying to 1999 AD with the Epoch. If you use the bucket in the end of time to fight Lavos, the ending WILL change. If you finish the game without Crono alive... Without Magus alive... There are countless possibilitys.

Roughly 15. Or is it 16? I don't remember.

I've never played the Chronicles version of Chrono Trigger. I played the SNES version, beat it a few times before I sold it (A sin I will never ever forgive myself for). While I recently got chronicles I'm trying to play back through the entire FF series right now and that's roughly 250+ hours of gameplay (II-X). Chrono Trigger is on the list, after homework lets up and I get some time. (see: 20 years).
