If you want a modern equivalent try Sid Meier's "Alpha Centauri". It's basically everything you probably loved about "Ambush" with alot of added extras and a better story line. In AC you have seven factions that were split up on the newly colonized Alpha Centauri. They immediately begin to try to further the ideals of their faction across the planet.
You have all sorts of ideologies and such, which leads to a very interesting plot. It seems right up your alley htjyang. If you're into Ambush, you should love Alpha Centauri.
I already have Alpha Centauri and if it's the best approximation of "Ambush", then that simply means there is nothing that approximates the latter.
In "Ambush", you're not really an independent force. You have to rely upon the established powers whereas in Alpha Centauri, you represent an individual government.
