Hey all... couple of problems. When you install OS 10.3.x, does need to contact a server to validate the installation or whatever?
I just bought a copy (yes, I promise it’s a real legal copy) and tried installing it on my G4... but, the computer froze right as the installer finished. I tried it again, and the same thing happened. I don’t have a modem on my G4, so I’m wondering if that’s my problem.
And it’s a major pain, because if I can’t get it fixed, I spent $138.68 for nothing...
Problem #2: Said machine refuses to go to sleep! Under OS 9.1, 9.2.1, and 9.2.2, it won’t sleep, even when the Energy Saver controls are set right. Whenever I ask it to sleep, a little yellow finder window pops up and says “Your computer can not go to sleep until the case is closed. Please close the case and try again.” But, it works fine in 10.0.4. That’d be spiffy... but I don’t use X often (yet?).
My G4 is a PowerMac G4 Tower (Sawtooth) 450 (single processor).
As always, I appreciate your time.

Windows does, you need the CD key to let it install in the first place (or at least to let it install & boot), then after 30 days if you don't "activate" windows, it will deny you access to everything.
Given I know that XP does this, (98/se dosen't, don't know about the others), and the only reason I know exsactly what XP does is that I tested it just cuz I was curious in the first place. A friend lent me the CD, but of couse not the key, not that I cared anyways, because the comptuer I installed it on barely meets the system stats, and is much happier running 98se (which I also happen to leagally own!). Especially seeing as all that computer needs to do is turn on, and know that it has a network card, and know how to access its drives, seeing as it is essentially a NAS machine, a comptuer with a bunch of harddrives that has the simple purpose of remote storage (which as far as I concerned, 98 is fine for, because for the life of me, I can't seem to setup Samba/netatalk, so *nix is out of the question).
As far as prop #2 goes, have you tried closing the case? I dunno, just a thought, but you didn't say weather or not the case WAS closed. If it was open, closing it could help....
It makes a big diffrence if the case was closed and it gave that message, or the case was Open and it gave that message, because then it has a perfectly good reason for doing so! (EG; its supposed to)

Yes, I have tired closing the case... I worked fine when I obtained it from Maxtor, but then I installed a HD three times the size of the one it came with and quadrupled the RAM, and now it doesn't work.
I also tried locking it. No sucess...

There is probably a mechanical switch, like on a refrigerator door, or a set of contacts on the case and door that close a circuit when the case is closed. You may have loosened a connection or broken a wire when you installed the ram and HD, or something (like a loose cable in the wrong place) could be preventing the door-closed sensor from activating when the door is closed. See if you can trick the computer into thinking that it's closed with a piece of wire, or by holding the switch down with tape or your hand.

I would think it would be more of a button (which is pressed or opened with the case is open), or at least that is much more caracheristic of Apple than having exposed contacts everywhere.

Back up all of your data onto a seperate drive or computer, and use the Erase and Install option on the 10.3 cd. this will completely wipe your drive. If this is not an option, use Archive and Install, which will create a seperate copy of all your data, which you can return to its proper location manually.

This doesn't make any sense unless you're upgrading from an older OS X install, and it sounds like Madman is coming from OS 9. (But your first suggestion is a good one.)

Thanks for your support, all.
I found my issue. It was booting off the wrong version of X... oops. Apparently, Jaguar didn't like 10.0.
The case. Oh joy, the case. It was broken... only minutely though. Basically, a little plastic thing on the handle had been broken, so the locking mechanism didn't pull up enough for the machine to register it, but enough to be effective physically locked.
*shrugs*

Well, Panther doesn't care if the case is open. Just tried it with the case wide open (Dual 450).

My dual 867 G4 tower dosen't seem to care if its running and I crack the case open (to let it vent faster, but I don't commonly leave it open for long, I need a PCI slot vent fan, and I don't care about the noise...)
In fact, I don't even know if it has a sensor, I haven't noticed one.
