Basically, if you are a fan of the original Metroid, you'll probably like this a lot, and I highly recommend it to fans of any of the old NES platformers.
Windows users:
http://agtp.romhack.net/doukutsu.htmlMac users: (This is going to be a bit more tricky.)
Here's the page of OS X software by Pixel:
http://www.eonet.ne.jp/~fuge/nakiwo/software.htmThe DL is the link under the top screencap, labled: ダウンロード(1.6MB)
Now, since the translation program is a Windows EXE, I've uploaded the translated data folder in a zip file for all here to download as needed, though I haven't asked it it's okay to do so, but I'm hoping it is, because I'm not selling it or anything, and it's to a free game and free translation:
(Credit goes to
http://agtp.romhack.net/ for the translation.)
http://homepage.mac.com/kamdrimar/data.zipTo install it, after installing Cave Story (Doukutsu), control/right click "Doukutsu.app" (or Doukutsu if you don't have it set to show the extension) and select "Show Package Contents". Copy the folder 'data' that you get from unzipping data.zip into the Resources folder (in Contents). When it asks you if you want to replace the existing folder, do so. You should be able to play it fine after that, and it's well worth the effort!
Controls:
tab = toggle fullscreen/windowed mode
Arrow keys = movement
down arrow = use/pick up object, door, etc.
z = jump/confirm
x = fire
a = previous weapon
s = next weapon
q = item screen
w = map (once map system is acquired)
escape = pause (F1 to resume, F2 to reset, escape again to quit.)

Er, wow. I take it there aren't any fans of the NES platformers on this board?

Though installing Cave Story is a bit more complicated than typical games, I assure you, it's well worth it. The game is extremely fun, and beautiful despite the 8-bit console-style graphics (which kind of add to the effect, IMO) and it also has a neat story with good plot pacing. I haven't beaten it yet, but I've gotten to the last boss (friggin' HARD!) and I must say, this is one of the best games I've played in a very long time.

Try re-downloading it? I downloaded it with Camino just now to test, and it worked fine. Mounted properly and everything.

Pretty fun. I'm stuck against the Labryinth boss, the machine with tank treads that moves back and forth between the force fields. It seems to have no vulnerable areas, and I can't find a secret passage or anything tricky like that. Any hints on how to damage it?
LawnGnome
Mar 3 2005, 04:06 PM
You have to destroy it's weapons first. When it stops and shoot, use the level 3 sword and get between it's "legs" and shoot straight up. If you do this a couple of times, you'll destroy it's guns and it will start shooting rockets; at this point when you shoot where you were before, you'll damage it.
I think.

Very nice game. Thanks for the link. I love how you can fly with the level 3 machinegun.

I know I missed a few things in my playthrough (e.g. mushroom patch, weaponsmith, and there's a boss I missed). Does finding secrets basically amount to backtracking at the right time, or what?

most seem to involve skipping useful things. if you don't get the machine gun, then you can trade in your polar star later for either the snake (requires your fireball also, but it kicks some serious ass) or the spur. if you don't get the booster v0.8, you can get the booster v2.0 later on. things like that.
the bubbler and the nemesis, however, are pretty much found by backtracking (both by going back to some part of the mimiga village)
Derakon
Mar 5 2005, 02:15 PM
Hmm...seems like some of the options are mutually exclusive. For example, if you don't have the machinegun, then you have to get the Booster 0.8; there's no other way to reach some of the platforms.
Right now, these are my unresolved things:
1) What do I do with the blue mushroom guy?
2) Where is the Little's family father?
3) What is the significance of a child born 04-08-08?
4) What do I do with the chest that won't open? What do the "A sign...?" tiles mean?
At a guess, for 1) I just need to check in on him at the right time; 2) is just hidden somewhere in the game and would be very annoying to check for; 3) is possibly a code for something I haven't found yet; 4) is to let me fight the optional boss which I haven't unlocked for whatever reason.
Wow! This is quite an excellent game...I'm not terribly far into it, but can already appreciate how kick ass the whole thing is. I hope it's pretty long. Yeah, there should be more retro style game development...it really is quite beautiful in it's own way...very simple, yet expressive. and i love the little touches and well balance game play...stuff like the level three bubbler, which you think sucks till you figure it out. well, it still kind of sucks but in a much cooler way. thanks naman!

Actually, there is. There's a red mark on the ground in the room where you would normally get the 0.8. Time your jump from that mark, and you'll make it across, and you won't need a booster until after you get the 2.0. (There are a couple of spots in the Labyrinth that you'll have to go back to after getting the new booster.)

i don't know, it is really nice to have something which doesn't turn to crap as soon as you get hit in a boss battle, and the nemesis is best at level 1 (not as powerful as a level 3 sword, but it is as powerful as a level 2 sword, iirc)

Ah. I had assumed that she would have one of the Sword or the Nemesis depending on which you picked before the endgame; looks like she just gets the Nemesis, period. In which case, I'd still pick the Nemesis over the Sword because of its faster firing rate and bullet speed. Avoiding powerups would be a bit tricky, though.

Ok. Just beat the game on the easy route. Holly shit that was fun. Time to go back for hard. Also if anyone who posted before reads this how exactly do you guys use the blade? I tend to just barely miss or hit some projectile which makes it useless half the time. The nemesis with fast enough fingers and close enough range slaughters.

Very fun game! I've always been partial to platformers, and "a game isn't a game unless you can see the pixels".
I've played through it twice, once doing just the obvious stuff ("obvious", in this case, includes that lovely weapon known as the Bubbler), and once doing most of the extra stuff. Both times were quite fun, although the "True Hero Mode" endgame is absolutely
evil. I'm now slowly going through again, because there were a couple suspicious loose ends poking out of the last game.
[EDIT]Cancel that bit about an "evil" endgame. What I'd run into was just garden-variety evil.
Now I've found the truely evil bit, and it's the most fun I've had in months!
Thanks for posting the link, translation, and installation instructions! I'm sure I'll have fun replaying this game for years to come.

I generally just fire it as fast as possible and hope it hits an enemy near my intended target. With some practice, you get pretty good at aiming it, but it's really best used against large clusters of enemies. When it falls to level two, I start aiming at projectiles- they often drop level points.

Niffty little thing I discovered. Now I know there's a bad ending if you decide to flee the island, but if you say you want to flee the island but don't talk to him again when you go outside you can continue on and beat the game. Not really usefull, but interesting.

I know, but I dislike having to do such things. Wish I could work out which values link to which piece of the game.
EDIT: The Booster v2.0 is fun, as is the Spur.
EDIT 2: So, am I the only one who stumbled on the extra ending first play through? Surely not.

Finally got around to playing and finishing this thanks to the long weekend and a nasty case of the flu. Great game, and absolutely superb piece freeware. The graphics is gorgeous and the story is surprisingly good, despite the usual "mad scientist tries to take over the world."
Hated the endgame though. Nothing like having to repeating same thing over and over just to be able to actually
play. That shit is totally 90's. In the end I just caved and got a trainer so i can watch the fricking ending and put the thing to rest. I think I was already kind of fed up with the way the gameplay was handled since around the Desert Zone (PUPPIES!), and pretty much rushed through the rest to see how the story plays out.

That's nothing. When you finish building the rocket in the Plantation, go up and ride it to the Final Cave without talking to the mother Sakamoto. No jetpack, and you ride out the whole game in Mimiga disguise (even the credits!) Some of the other characters will even comment on it when you get to the Throne Room.

Yes, that is fun. Having tried that section without the Booster, I'm considering trying to play the entire game without equipping the thing.

I have not been able to replicate that- my character that had had the Bubbler since discovering the Jellyfish Juice lost his sword in exchange for the Nemesis. At any rate, if you have the Spur, I really can't see much use for that weapon, and even if you don't have the Spur, there are only two stages where the Nemesis would be particularly useful.
At any rate, I finally managed to complete the evil endgame, thanks mainly to a streak of luck that kept my health at 55 until the very last boss. I must say that I'm in awe of the people who can go through that section with three health points and practically no weapons, and finish in less than five minutes.
@Aelran: I didn't run across it until my second play through, while following up on the various hints in this thread about "extra things you can do". At the very least, I wouldn't expect anyone to skip the Booster 0.8 unless they've seen hints about doing so leading to great things.
Finally, in case anyone's interested, the Cave Story translation was officially ported to the Mac version a few months after Naman posted this thread, and can be found at
this site. It's slightly more thorough than the version in this thread, in that it also translates the stage titles that appear whenever you enter a new stage.

I could see the possibility of making that jump – figured I might as well try it for a while, given that there's a save point right above the thing. I generally try that sort of thing – up to and including reloading.
As for the people completing Hell with three health: I'm not going to bother trying. It's not like I'd come close to succeeding, anyway.

The thing I'd like to mention is that I'm almost positive the trading the bubbler for the nemesis thing is impossible and just a rumor. I've been stuck on hell for quite awhile now. I always screw up getting to the boss or when I finally get to him I screw up fighting him and just don't have enough health to continue. I am of course cursing the fact that I traded in the blade.
