I am having problems with the gesture system - what can I do?

It is the starting and ending points, plus the corners that make the difference. Be sure your corners are sharp, and that they begin and end at the same location, or at the proper location relative to each other. Also, be sure to not let go of the option key until the gesture is complete. Hold the option key, make the gesture, let go of the mouse button, and then release the option key
