How do I join a particular government?

Aligning yourself with a particular government can be intentional or unintentional. The easiest way is to frequent systems and planets of that government and accept missions that are offered in the spaceport bars. It may be too late to align with a particular government, since you may have destroyed one too many of that government's ships.
